First Syracuse Community Building

A long time before the present Syracuse Community Center was opened, Syracuse had another community building. This building, now home to a roofing and sheet metal business, once served as a community gathering place. It is located on Pearl Street in the first block east of Huntington Street (State Road 13) in Syracuse, Kosciusko County. High school and amateur basketball games were played in the building, among other activities including movies. If you go north to Main Street and look toward the building you can see the arched roof that is a sure sign basketball was played there. The building has had multiple uses through the years, including a beverage company.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
