Lincoln Highway near Columbia City

In the 1920s, before the federal highway numbering system took effect, there was the Lincoln Highway in Whitley County, Indiana. Shown is the old Lincoln Highway northwest of Columbia City on a stretch of road now known as Lincolnway West. It is close to the intersection with County Road 250 West. The photo shows a trace of an old road remnant closer to the camera. Not seen to the right is a house that used to be a gas station with the overhang still present. Next to the house is Mike’s Sports Shop where fishing gear and other items are sold (there is a lake nearby).

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
