Original Model School in Goshen

It may seem hard to believe, given the size of today’s school buildings, this building was once a school for students in grades K through eighth. It is the original Model School and is located on Berkey Avenue on the northeast corner of the intersection with Greene Road on the west side of Goshen in Elkhart County. It was originally an Elkhart Township school and opened in the fall of 1924. For many years, grades K-8 attended and in 1958, the last eighth grade class came through. Then in 1964, Goshen Community Schools was organized and Model was consolidated into the district that same year. Eventually a new Model Elementary School was built next door to the north. The original building was used by the school district as a transportation office for quite a few years and had been slated for demolition until someone purchased it. Since then it has been used for various classes such as reading instruction and martial arts, among other uses.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
