Gravelton School is now a home

A few of the former one-room schoolhouses remain standing. Some of them have been adapted for other uses, such as the former Gravelton School on County Road 400 West in Jefferson Township, Kosciusko County. It is located just south of the Elkhart County line. It was built originally in about 1900 and at the time was one of eight district school buildings in Jefferson Township. Gravelton was an early village in the township and thrived for a while, but never grew beyond its platted size. Residents were able to gain access to other communities through improved roads and eventually the automobile. Today the former Gravelton School serves as a private residence. It still has the look of a historic one-room schoolhouse, though.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
