Old road alignment in Elkhart County

Roads change and evolve through time as transportation needs and patterns change. For just one example, what is now State Road 15 in Jefferson Township, Elkhart County, north of Goshen, formerly known as the Goshen-Bristol Road, followed a route to the east of its present one. It crossed County Road 24. This photo was taken standing on CR 24 facing south and is less than a mile east of SR 15. A photo really doesn’t clearly show the fact this was once a roadbed, but if you stop and look closely you can get a better feel for it. Remember, old road alignments often meandered and didn’t exactly follow a straight course. Road builders followed the high ground and road building equipment could not overcome some of the obstacles it can today.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
