Site of former Sugar Hill Farm in Benton Township

When surveyors were originally surveying Elkhart County in its very early years, they described one particular location as Sugar Ridge in Benton Township. Perhaps the surveyors noticed an abundance of sugar maple trees in that area. It was located along the old Fort Wayne-Goshen Road, which essentially became U.S. 33. Today it is near County Road 137, south of Benton. There was the Sugar Hill Farm for several years at that location. It is no longer an active sugar farm, but at times maple syrup is still extracted from the trees. There was also once a barn on top of the hill that became a well known historic landmark. It caught on fire in April 1997 and was damaged so badly it had to eventually be torn down. The photo shows the house still standing at the former Sugar Hill Farm.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
