Old Nickel Plate Railroad line

Last weekend there was quite a stir in Elkhart County when restored steam locomotive number 765 came through. It is a rare occasion to be able to see a steam powered train in the local area. In order to get to Elkhart, the locomotive had to travel on part of an old Nickel Plate Railroad line. Shown is a section of this line in Allen County, not far from the Whitley County line and near the small community of Arcola. Note the old poles with wire insulators on them. These are likely no longer used, but once served to carry communication lines for the railroad. On most older railroad lines, the poles have been removed but this is one exception. Arcola is an unincorporated community with a history of being connected to the railroad line.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
