1920s garage in Whitley County

In South Whitley, Whitley County, there are several older houses built in the later 1800s still standing. Some of these still have old detached garages still standing, too. This detached garage in the 200 block of North State Street, also State Road 5, was built in about 1925 according to county property records found online. It doesn’t look very big by today’s standards, but in the 1920s automobiles were generally not as big and it would have been far more uncommon for a household to have more than one car. In fact, for a house to even have one car was still unusual in that decade. The house was built in about 1890, so one wonders if the garage replaced a carriage or buggy house or if it was renovated into an automobile garage in the 1920s. State Road 5 itself is historical as it is part of what was once the Goshen-Huntington State Road.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
