Barn still stands in South Whitley

I have family living in South Whitley and I couldn’t help but notice this old red barn standing behind a house in a neighborhood along State Street, which is also State Road 5. This is not far from where 5 crosses the railroad tracks. When I first saw the barn, I thought it was odd there would be a barn in a residential neighborhood. But when you look at the house it sits behind, you realize when the house was built there probably weren’t near as many houses around as there are now. Online Whitley County property records show the barn was built in 1901 and the house, which is a beautiful piece of architecture, was built in 1885. At that time, this would have been considered close to the very edge of town. It may have been a small farm with livestock being raised on it. But the barn still stands today.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
