County road was an alternate SR 13 route

As towns and rural areas grow and the population shifts, road needs change too. Roads have evolved through the years. Shown is an example of this. What is now County Road 43 in Elkhart County was once an alternate route for State Road 13 known as State Road 13A. It ran from what was then State Road 8 in Kosciusko County north across U.S. Highway 6 to what is now County Road 50 (Old U.S. 33 or the Lincoln Highway too), then turned east to eventually link up with the main State Road 13. The road ran east of Lake Wawasee. It was classified as an alternate loop, but has since been decommissioned as a state road. I’m not sure when this took place, but I have a Shell roadmap of Indiana dated 1958 showing the alternate route. The photo shows County Road 43 looking to the north with U.S. 6 barely visible in the distance.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
