Route of Old 15 near Warsaw

Today heavy traffic travels on State Road 15 in Kosciusko County. And it has since the 1930s, though in the early years there were not nearly as many cars on the road as there are today. But this was not the original route of the highway, at least in part. Shown in the photo is the old route of 15 just north of Warsaw. I took the photo facing south while standing on the road. Off in the distance is a stop sign where Old 15 intersects Levi Lee Road. By the 1930s a new 15 had been built and it was designated a state road. It runs parallel with the old road and to the west of the old road. One of the major reasons the new road was built was to reduce the number of railroad crossings and keep the road as much as possible on the same side of the tracks. Old 15 was once known as the Hoosier Dixie Highway, a part of the Dixie Highway road system. It became a state route in the early 1920s before losing that designation a few years later. Levi Lee Road may have been part of the original route of State Road 15, but I don’t know that for sure.

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.

Old SR 15 may have been called the Hoosier Dixie Highway but I don’t believe it had anything to to do with the national 1915 Dixie Highway system. It doesn’t connect with any Dixie Highway towns.

As an aside – SR 15 from Bristol to the MI state line was part of an official Detroit to Elkhart Lincoln Highway Feeder Route.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on my post. It’s certainly possible I could have misunderstood what I read, but I recall reading something a while back saying the Hoosier Dixie Highway was considered like a branch route of the national Dixie Highway system. What is now Old State Road 15 is only part of the Hoosier Dixie Highway. There are two or three other roads which are now either state or federal roads that were part of the state route. As I recall it eventually fed into Cincinnati.
