Dirt road near Nappanee a reminder of the past

Sometimes I get curious when I see a dirt road near a state or federal highway. Was the dirt road once an alignment for another road? Once in a while, it really was, such as this road east of Nappanee. Today County Road 56 is a dirt road but the older maps I’ve looked at clearly show it was once an alignment of what is now U.S. Highway 6. U.S. 6 takes a slight curve at this location now, but an older alignment had the road going straighter. To the east, it took a jog back north to meet the current alignment. More precisely, this is about a half-mile west of County Road 15 and close to U.S. 6. The photo shows where CR 56 crosses the Wagner Ditch. The bridge was built in 1961. I’m guessing CR 56 is not a very heavily traveled road and that is why it has remained a dirt road. A remnant of a road alignment from the past survives today.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
