Y Drive-In restaurant was near North Webster

Although there are still a few drive-in restaurants scattered about, many more existed years ago. The Y Drive-In was just north of North Webster off State Road 13 where that road intersects with the Syracuse-Webster Road in Kosciusko County. The drive-in took its name from the nearby Y-shaped intersection. County property records found online show the building for the restaurant, still standing today, was built in 1938. It was likely a restaurant through the 1940s and by 1950 was listed as a ceramics shop. Ernest and Wanda Freeze owned the drive-in restaurant for a while, though I’m not sure if they were the only owners of it. This couple was featured in a North Webster Cemetery Walk a few years ago. Reenactors portray people buried in the cemetery during the Cemetery Walk. Eventually the building became a part of what is now Clayton’s Garden Center. The building for the restaurant is on the south end of that property. Details are sketchy about the restaurant since it was so long ago when it operated, but a few people remember the rickety wooden floors.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
