Historic Bristol Opera House was built prior to 1900

Downtown Bristol in Elkhart County has a few historic buildings still standing. Some of these were featured a few days ago in a walking tour offered by the Elkhart County Historical Museum. Shown in the photo is the Bristol Opera House on Vistula Street or State Road 120. It was built in 1897 by Elkhart brothers Cyrus and Horace Mosier. The first production was “U.S.S. Pinafore” by the Arion Company. The opera house became a showplace for arts and entertainment in Bristol. Before 1940, it served as a music hall, cinema and even a skating rink. I’ve also read high school basketball games were played in the opera house before a gym was built at the school. But in 1940 the building was deemed unsafe for anything but storage and remained in that status until the early 1960s. At that time, slated for demolition, the building was rescued by the Elkhart Civic Theater. The building was brought back to its former glory and reopened in July 1961. Today the building is still used by the Elkhart Civic Theater. You can also find some stories online about the building being haunted with, so it is said, a few ghosts lurking around. I won’t go into anymore detail about that.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
