Building in Goshen has served multiple purposes

The City of Goshen in Elkhart County has several historic buildings, some of which have been beautifully preserved or restored. Shown in the photo is a building in the 100 block of North Main Street in the downtown area. It presently serves as a law office. According to information provided by the Goshen Historical Museum, it dates to about 1889 and was originally a grocery store. Since then it has been used for multiple purposes. For some of those years it was again a grocery store under different ownership and also served as a photography studio, boots and shoes dealer, restaurant and saloon, meat market and again was used by different attorneys. The building sits next to an alley. Alleys still serve a purpose today as they did in the past. I have posted several times information about historic buildings in downtown Goshen and will continue to do so.

About historynut11

My name is Tim Ashley and I am a newspaper editor/reporter/photographer in Milford, Indiana, and live in nearby Goshen, Indiana. A deeply held and sincere passion of mine is history and learning from the past. I enjoy a wide variety of history topics, but particularly local history, noted American highways (Lincoln Highway and Route 66), railroad history and the Civil War. I believe we can learn much from the past and that past shapes who we are today. I also enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, as well as taking photos of remnants from the past still standing.
